RUNNING WITH JACK BAUER

run

Mark Cooper of Edinburgh, Scotland, will attempt to set a world record for the longest run on a treadmill – 161 miles – in one day. To do it, Cooper plans to have CTU agent Jack Bauer to keep him company by watching a complete season as he puts one foot in front of the other. “I’m going to use all the tricks and ideas I can come up with to try and get through,” Cooper told the Scottish website STV. “One of the tricks I’m going to use to actually get through it is I’ve got every episode of 24 for one series, so in 24 hours I should just be able to watch the whole series and that’ll be me at the end on Friday night.” Cooper, 28, an elite runner who ran 50 marathons across Europe in 56 days last year, will also reportedly be raising money for Funding Neuro, a charity dedicated to funding research for neurological disorders. The current record holder is Arulanantham Suresh Joachim who ran 160.24 miles on a treadmill in Canada in 2004. DRESSING DR. RUSH

doc

“I loved to dress Dr. Nicholas Rush, played by Robert Carlyle,” says Stargate Universe’s costume designer Valerie Halverson in an exclusive interview with the VIP Fan Blog. “He really appreciated that costumes helped define his character. Because he had such a great personal style, it was always fun to come up with a costume for him. There is an interesting story about how his original costume came to be: Robert arrived in town for his first fitting and as we had had some dialogue he was prepared for what I had envisioned him wearing, which was a layered costume. It included pants, a short-sleeve T-shirt with a vest and a suede jacket. As Robert arrived in jeans he had just kept them on, which we realized was a much better look than the pants I had made for him. I then explained that I had wanted to make a beautiful lining for his vest, and what I came up with was piecing together silk to look like the surface of a planet. Robert embraced this idea so much that he had me make some pockets in the lining for his pencil and notepad, and we both knew that the fans would be seeing it every episode. It was an homage to the sci-fi genre.”

Another piece of Dr. Rush’s wardrobe – the Marines uniform he wore on-screen during Stargate Universe’s second season finale, “Gauntlet,” just came up for auction at VIP Fan Auctions. And if you’re a fan of the good doctor, his chess board – featured in the episode “Seizure” is also available to the highest bidder. 24 STAR NAMED ONE OF HOLLYWOOD’S BEST

ks

If you didn’t already recognize Kiefer Sutherland as one of the best actors working today (though we’d like to see him working on a 24 movie soon!), Screen Junkies has made it official by ranking the 24 star at No. 4 – just after action legend Charles Bronson (3) and ahead of 300’s Gerard Butler (5) – on its Top 10 list of Hollywood’s top actors. The site writes of Sutherland: “From playing a mullet-haired vampire in The Lost Boys to a detective in 24, Kiefer proves he has his daddy’s talent-and plenty of his own attitude-to stand the test of time.” The list was weighted heavily toward action – Sylvester Stallone took top honors (though Arnold Schwarzenegger was absent from the list) – which is just fine with us. And since we’re celebrating Sutherland’s Bauer Power – don’t let the clock run out on a one-of-a-kind opportunity to own a shirt Sutherland wore on-screen during Season Eight of 24 (episode 9:00 a.m. – 10 a.m.) from VIP Fan Auctions. The auction ends July 26 – and so far, this piece of TV history is still available at an incredibly reasonable price. Click here for more information or to place your bid today!

CRITIC HAILS CLEAR EYES, FULL HEARTS

As the final curtain closed on Friday Night Lights, Chicago Sun-Times columnist and film critic Richard Roeper praised the quality of the remarkable series and likened the TV incarnation of the story to another groundbreaking series, MASH, which was also preceded by a book and film.”Like MASH, Friday Night Lights is that extremely rare television adaptation that’s even more memorable than the book and the movie that preceded it,” Roeper wrote in a column titled “Friday Night Lights was about so much more than small-town football” on July 13. “For the last five years, this series has outperformed the vast majority of movies I’ve seen. At times it has achieved the level of true modern art.” He added: “Through the seasons, Friday Night Lights dealt with issues ranging from class warfare to drug addiction to abortion to murder, almost never devolving into soap opera. There were more than a dozen characters that could have carried their own series, from Zach Gilford’s Matt Saracen to Adrianne Palicki’s Tyra to the Riggins brothers to Buddy Garrity, played by the invaluable Brad Leland.” Hopefully, we’ll see these characters again someday.

STARGATE'S COSTUME DESIGNER TALKS SHOP

vh1

With Stargate Universe wardrobe and props auctions set to debut Tuesday, July 19, VIP Fan Auctions caught up with Valerie Halverson, franchise’s talented – and incredibly creative – costumer designer to talk about her role in creating the look and feel of Stargate Universe and other series in the SG world.

VIP: How did you get into costume design?
Halerie Halverson: I started sewing my own clothes in high school as I wanted something unique. That led me to design school and I started my own company with a private clientele, eventually being asked to design for a local clothing store. When that ended I was ready for a new challenge and talked to a friend in the film industry. Not knowing what I was getting into I started at the ground floor, sewing moccasins and learning breakdown and worked my way up to Costume Designer.

VIP: Can you describe the design process when a new season launches and you find yourself reading a script with entirely new characters whose wardrobes you have to create?
VH: It really is exciting to read a script, get a feeling for a character, and then talk to the writer and director about their concept. My job is to interpret their vision – as well as the actor’s – for that character. The costume can really help an actor feel right for his role, whether it is a period show or it takes place in the future. I love this part of the process as it allows me to get into the layers of a character, to really understand them, and then to express myself creatively.

VIP: Is there a wardrobe item that you would like to have a chance to do differently?
VH: I would like a chance to redo the Lucian Alliance from “Subversion” (#118), when they are on their ship and in the pyramid. What Brad Wright had envisioned was a more understated army than I had originally designed, so I feel that the second look – on the Destiny – was more appropriate for Stargate Universe . I was very pleased with the outcome – sort of a SWAT-in-space look.

VIP: What costume are you most proud of?
VH: I would have to say that one of my favorite costumes was
For Adria (played by Morena Baccarin), when she was in Season 10 of SG1 – in “Dominion” (#1019). One of the challenges of being on a series is keeping it fresh, and because Adria was such a complex character, I wanted her costume to be equally so. When I read the script and saw that she was going to be captured by Ba’al, I saw an opportunity to make her even sexier than usual while she was in the cell. But it couldn’t just be the design – I had to make something new. With my cutter, Leslie, I created a new type of leather. By building an overlay of shrunken ribbon and lace onto the leather, even though the costume was predominately black, it had a lot of dimension to it. In the photo above you can see that Ba’als costume is made of laser-cut leather over a brocade fabric, with his Goa’uld tattoo on the back.
