COMMANDING PRESENCE

c

It’s fitting that SGU star Robert Carlyle directed the second-season episode “Pathogen” because his character, Dr. Rush, also took control of The Destiny – without informing Col. Everett Young (played by Louis Ferreira) that he was doing so. While Young notices that the good doctor’s behavior is a bit out of sorts, it isn’t until several episodes later that Young discovers Rush’s serious breach of protocol. Whether Rush’s actions were justified or not, it was a pivotal episode – and one Stargate fan has the opportunity to own a piece of Stargate history by wining the auction for the Icarus uniform Col. Young wore on-screen in the episode. Visit the Stargate page at VIP Fan Auctions to place your bid on this uniform – and other Stargate props, wardrobe and production items – today. But hurry – the auction ends soon!

TRAPPED IN SPACE

c

Stargate Universe’s costume designer Valerie Halverson shares a revealing behind-the-scenes story about the first-season episode “Space,” in which Dr. Rush and Chloe Armstrong (played by Elyse Levesque) are prisoners on an alien ship. To complicate matters, Col. Young arrives on the ship and also turns into an alien. But not all of the effects were as high-tech as you might think. Halverson revealed to VIP Fan Blog: “The greatest challenge was when Col. Young was using the stones and became an alien. The director, Andy Mikita, wanted to do that in one shot, so I had to devise a way to change Col. Young from his Icarus uniform into an alien without cutting the take. What we had to do in the end was build a full Icarus uniform for Col. Young with Velcro down the back and on the sleeves as he was going to have to hide the bony gauntlets of the alien costume. Two of my team stood behind Col. Young, holding him steady, and as he reacted to the stones we ripped his costume off. Any movement is barely noticeable and his alien costume was revealed underneath. Quite an accomplishment for all concerned!” Right now, the costume she wore on-screen aboard the alien ship – including gauntlets and re-breather equipment – in the episode by Chloe is available at VIP Fan Auctions. I CAN READ YOUR MIND….

communicate

Unfortunately, since I’m from one planet and you’re from another, I have no idea what you’re thinking. But that didn’t stop Dr. Rush from communicating with extra-terrestrials when he found himself stranded in space – and it shouldn’t stop you form checking out the screen-used Alien Mind-Reading Device (they even light-up – se photo above) available at VIP Fan Auctions. The prop is from the first-season Stargate Universe episode “Space” – and it could be yours. Place your bid today!

SGU's subtle homage to science fiction

RUSH

Stargate Universe wardrobe designer Valerie Halverson isn’t coy about naming her favorite cast member to dress. The answer: Robert Carlyle, who played Dr. Rush.”He really appreciated that costume helped define his character,” Halverson says. “Because he had such a great personal style, it was always fun to come up with a costume for him. There is an interesting story about how his original costume (pictured above) came to be: Robert arrived in town for his first fitting and as we had had some dialogue he was prepared for what I had envisioned him wearing, which was a layered costume. It included pants, a short-sleeve T-shirt with a vest and a suede jacket. Since Robert arrived in jeans, he just kept them on, which we realized was a much better look than the pants I had made for him. I then explained that I had wanted to make a beautiful lining for his vest and what I came up with was piecing together silk to look like the surface of a planet. Robert embraced this idea so much that he had me make some pockets in the lining for his pencil and notepad and we both knew that the fans would be seeing it every episode. It was an homage to the sci-fi genre.”

The story continues: Right now, one fan can own Dr. Rush’s screen-worn outfit from the first SGU episode – but you better hurry, because the auction on this unique item expires Tuesday! Check out the details – blazer, jeans, tee-shirt and the one-of-a-kind VEST that Valerie Halverson describes – available right now at VIP Fan Auctions. Do not let this piece of SGU – and sci-fi history – get away!

WHAT YOU DIDN’T SEE ON SGU

For all of the amazing stories and effects fans saw on-screen during Stargate Universe, there was also a lot of action off camera. In the exclusive VIP Fan Blog interview excerpt below, Stargate Universe’s costume designer Valerie Halverson shares one of the more memorable behind-the-scenes secrets!

Valerie Halverson: Dr. Rush was left for dead in “Justice” (SGU episode  #110) and we learn he was discovered by aliens. When we come upon him in “Space” (episode #111), he is on another ship and in an alien costume (pictured above). We learn that Chloe is also a prisoner and in the same costume, and as Col. Young arrives on the ship, he is in the same alien suit.

The alien was designed by our production designer, James Robbins, and our visual effects supervisor, Mark Savela. Once that was approved, I had to make the costume. Working with Gord Bellamy of the Model Shop, we came up with the look that you saw on the episode.

The greatest challenge was when Col. Quite an accomplishment for all concerned!

Check out a uniform worn on-screen in Season Two’s “Aftermath” (episode  #202) by Col. Young as well as Chloe’s alien suit from Season One’s “Space” (episode 111) at VIP Fan Auctions. But hurry – these auctions end soon!
