Jon Hamm on "Conan"

When “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm, who plays Don Draper on the AMC series, appeared on Conan O’Brien’s new TBS late-night talk show on Nov. 10 (click on “Clips” then “Celebs”), he revealed that Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is a dangerous place to work.  “I have gone to the hospital twice. The first season, a piece of the set fell on my head … to be fair it was pretty funny,” Hamm told O’Brien, noting that he needed seven stitches to close the wound. In the second season, Hamm broke his hand during rehearsal of a war flashback and then separated his shoulder during shooting. Afterward, during a scene in which Draper promotes Peggy Olson to copywriter, the scene called for actress Elizabeth Moss to shake his hand. “I warned her that my hand was physically broken and remarkably painful,” Hamm recalled, asking the actress snot to squeeze it. “She apparently thought I was kidding and, when we actually shot it, gave me the full-on ‘congratulations’ handshake… I shrieked like a girl, hit my knees – she was mortified – and it was the most painful experience I’ve ever gone through in my life.”

Say what?

Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm) seems to have a way to express the word “what” to suit any occasion “Mad Men” throws at him. If you don’t believe us, take a look at Draper’s compilation video on YouTube that splices together 46 uses of Draper’s signature exclamation. The description of the video says Draper uses the word “as Van Gogh used color or Beethoven used sound.” Posted Oct. 18, the video has been viewed more than 400,000 times.

Sterling's Gold

If you can’t get enough of the all-too-brief seasons of Mad Men, you will soon have a must-read to help get you through the months between. The fictional memoir that advertising kingpin Roger Sterling Jr. penned in the fourth season of the show has found a real publisher! Sterling’s Gold: Wit and Wisdom of an Ad Man is being published by Grove/Atlantic in time for Christmas.

Examples of Sterling’s wit and witticism in the book include:

“You want to be on some people’s minds. Some people’s you don’t.”

“The day you sign a client is the day you start losing them.”

“Being with a client is like being in a marriage. Sometimes you get into it for the wrong reasons and eventually they hit you in the face.”

“When a man gets to a point in his life when his name’s on the building, he can get an unnatural sense of entitlement.”

“Remember, when God closes a door, he opens a dress.”

The book is expected to be released in November, with a cover price of $16.95.
