Ben-Hur’s Historical Chariot Race

maxresdefault

Although Ben Hur is seen as a remake of a remake, director Timur Bekmambetov says his version goes back to the source – Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel. The 2016 version is more historically accurate than its predecessors and challenged the remakes with an epic chariot race.

“We were trying to reconstruct how it was in Jerusalem’s Circus Maximus [chariot-racing stadium] 2,000 years ago,” says the 55-year-old Russian. His inspiration: Formula 1 races and YouTube clips.

Bekmambetov wanted to create a different energy for his take on the tale. “With Formula 1 cars you have a camera inside the car, it’s vibrating, and that shaky footage makes you feel like you’re actually inside it.”

He wanted to capture every moment on screen to catch every spontaneous moment, a sense of events being just about caught on camera. “Mistakes make a shot look real,” he says.

The “mistakes,” of course, were precisely planned and executed – the set, which was built just outside of Rome, was 300 meters long, and a chariot race that took 45 days to film.

The crew used CGI as minimal as possible, mostly the shots that would have put the animals in danger. Still, the sequence involved 32 horses galloping around together simultaneously, so nothing could be left to chance.

“There was no room for improvisation,” he says. “In the original 1925 film there was an accident and some horses, and a person, died.  We tried to avoid that!”

Here’s how they created that different spontaneous energy.

  • Horse – mounted cameras – To give the scene more energy they attached GoPros to the horses’ heads.
  • Drone Filming – Before launching UAV cameras on set, the horses were trained to become used to the constant buzzing.
  • The chariots – He wanted to make the more realistic, which made it more dangerous, there were no railings – you were really exposed.

Ben Hur is now playing in theaters.  Be sure to check out the Ben-Hur movie auctions at www.benhurauctions.com.

Ben-Hur Director: “Our Movie Is Different”

timur

Jason Rothenberg from The Hollywood Reporter sat down with Ben Hur director Timur Bekmambetov. Bekmambetov is known for being the filmmaker behind Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the upcoming film Ben Hur, one would not expect him to live in the former home of Walt Disney. After all, he made his big break from Night Watch, a R-rated horror fantasy that became Russia’s highest grossing film in 2004. Walking into his home, it is filled with sketches of animated characters and a customized Ping-Pong table featuring Mickey Mouse figurines. “He was a visionary man. He invented a whole world,” says Bekmambetov, 55, of Disney.

Bekmambetov is trying to use the creative inspiration from Disney in his most expensive film to date, Ben Hur, Paramount and MGM’s nearly $100 million-budget adaptation of Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel. And he hopes to escape the shadow from the 1959 film adaptation of Ben Hur, which grossed ten times its $15 million budget. Bekmambetov has a busy life, along with directing, he is married to costume designer Varvara Avdyushko and has two daughters.

Bekmambetov admits that taking on this iconic story was intimidating. It is a great story that has a lot of history of being a great fictional version of a biblical story. It is very rare that you have material that is centered on a specific message, along with epic naval battles and chariot races. Although, Bekmambetov was up to the challenge and wanted to step up when no one else would. The 1959 film has a different message than the book. The book focused on forgiveness, and the 1959 film was based on revenge and miracles. And Bekmambetov is going down a different path as well, using his creative inspiration from Disney to create his own legacy. See Bekmambetov’s full quote below.

“It was scary. It’s a great, great book. It’s very unique because it’s a fictional version of the biblical story. It’s very rare when you have material with a message. And at the same time, it’s very entertaining because of the unbelievable naval battles and chariot races. But I like to take a risk and do something nobody wants to try. The 1959 movie is not the same as the book, which has a very different message. The book was written about forgiveness, and the movie they made in 1959 — a great movie — it’s about revenge and miracles. Our movie is different.”

Ben Hur hits theatres August 19, lets see if Bekmambetov can create magic with his adaptation.

Bad Moms Ladies Night Out

Bad Moms

If you are planning a ladies night out this summer, mark July 29th on your calendar. Mila Kunis is staring in the hilarious and extremely relatable must see summer comedy Bad Moms.

An incredible assembled cast including Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, and Christina Applegate joins Mila Kunis in this highly anticipated comedy. And from the trailers and information revealed so far they will not be holding anything back and should deliver a raunchy comedy that will leave us with some memorable scenes leaving the theatre.

Everyone can relate to the feelling of not being able to live up to expectations, especially when it comes to being the “perfect mother.” Being a mother is one of the hardest jobs in the world and also one of the most underappreciated. Also, all the main cast mothers are mothers, so they know all the pressures that motherhood brings.

Bad Moms is about an alternate universe where moms rebel and start acting more reckless than there own kids. A group of suburban moms are overworked, under-appreciated, and pushed beyond their limit. The story centers on three women who ditch their maternal responsibilities for a long awaited adventure that we all imagine having one day, although they may have taken it a few steps too far. The adventure brings freedom, fun, and comedic self-indulgence.

The combination of the cast and the story, I don’t see how this cant be hysterical. Other well known co-stars include Gotham’s Jada Pinkett Smith, new Netflix original The Fundamentals of Caring Megan Ferguson, and pop vocalist Ke$ha even made an appearance.

Go see this on July 29th and let us know what you think of the film. The comedy comes out in less than three weeks; hopefully we get more behind the scenes footage before it hits theatres. The official studio auctions will be at www.badmomsauction.com with the films release.

Dark Tower Update: Mike Flanagan (Oculus and Hush) Wants to Direct

The Dark Tower

EW reports that director Mike Flanagan (Oculus and Hush) said recently that he wants to direct a film in The Dark Tower franchise.

VIP has been closely following the first movie in that series, which of course is directed by Nikolaj Arcel and stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Flanagan was quoted on the Shock Waves podcast saying, “For me, the Dark Tower is a dream project,” he continued, “My favorite [book] is number number four. Wizard and Glass, I want it. But we’ll have to see.” Apparently Flanagan has also proposed another Kind adaption, 1992’s Gerald’s Game.

It’s a tough project to undertake, but EW again reports that it could be picked up by Netflix, which debuted Hush in April. Flanagan is reportedly very busy. He’s currently working on two projects, Ouija 2 and a reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

It’s unclear whether he’ll get a crack at the Dark Tower series, but VIP will be following it the whole way.

‘Dark Tower’ Movie Casting News

Dark Tower Movie

Dark Tower has been making moves recently in terms of casting. The screen adaption of Stevn King’s acclaimed novel series already locked in Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey to pick up two of the lead roles. Elba will be starring as Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger. McConaughey will be starring as the infamous Man in Black, Roland’s nemesis.

Recently The Hollywood Reporter revealed that former Dollhouse and Much Ado about nothing star, Fran Kranz, will be suiting up for Dark Tower in the role of Pimli. Pimli is the right hand man to The Man in Black.

He’s a pivotal character and most reports will agree that Kranz is the perfect man for the job.

Ethan Anderton from /Film wrote, “My hope is that Kranz isn’t just being brought in as a sort of comic relief sidekick to the villain, like some kind of bumbling or wisecracking henchman.” I think we can all agree with that, and based off the casting decision, it’s not likely something we will need to worry about.

Kranz is also very well known for his role Cabin in the Woods.

Dark Tower is set to hit theaters in February of 2017. The compelling cast also includes the like of Jackie Earle Haley, Tom Taylor, and Abbey Lee. It is directed by Nikolaj Arcei, and produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.

‘Free State of Jones’, A True Civil War Story

Free State of Jones
The new movie Free State of Jones has brought a Civil war era true story to light and tells a tale of a Mississippi farmer who led a revolt against the Confederacy. This is not a story they tell us in school, but the Smithsonian magazine will tell us the true story.

The story is told in Jones County, Mississippi, where a poor white farmer who led an extraordinary rebellion during the Civil War. With a company of like-minded white men from southern Mississippi they did the unthinkable. Knight waged guerrilla war against the Confederacy and declared loyalty to the Union. In spring of 1864, Knights Company overthrew the Confederacy in Jones County and actually raised the Unites States flag over the county courthouse in Ellisville. The county was known as the free state of Jones, and some say it actually succeeded from the Confederacy. Knight and his men had several hideouts and the Confederates would continue to send in troops but couldn’t destroy the rebellious company. We will see how much of the film sticks to being historical accuracy, but nonetheless I am excited for this film that should be action packed and it also stars Matthew McConaughey as the lead role. The film comes out May 13, 2016.
