Multiple Golden Globe and Emmy award winning show Ugly Betty has unfortunately moved on to the great Nielsen’s box in the sky, but that doesn’t mean that fans of the ABC series are left high and dry.  We have heard from many of you asking what has happened to the talented cast since the show’s cancelation.  We are sure it is no surprise to you that the cast members have embarked on some exciting projects of the non-Betty variety (and even some of the Betty variety but more on that later).  Here is an update as to what the cast has been up to.

America Ferrera (Betty) — America Ferrera’s appearance in recently released independent film The Dry Land has generated major hype since its premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.  Accolades include winning awards at the Seattle International Film Festival, Edinburough Film Festival and the Dallas International Film Festival. Besides promoting the movie, America Ferrera has been enjoying her recent engagement to longtime boyfriend and The Dry Land’s director Ryan Piers Williams.

Vanessa Williams (Wilhelmina) — Vanessa Williams has moved all the way from Betty’s Manhattan to another location that should be quite familiar to the ABC faithful. Look for Vanessa to take Wisteria Lane by storm as she joins the cast of Desperate Housewives for the upcoming seventh season of the hit series. Fans of both series are very excited to see the Queen B (not the buzz, buzz kind) of Manhattan settle down in the scandalous small town of Fairview. Although she’s been busy with filming, Vanessa hasn’t forgotten her first love, fashion. At the world’s largest fashion trade show, WWDMAGIC 2010, Vanessa announced the launch of her first handbag collection, which she kicked off with a personal appearance at the show.

Eric Mabius (Daniel) — Former People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, Eric Mabius, has been very, very busy as of recent.  First up for Eric is a starring role in BBC America’s Outcasts, an eight part sci-fi/pioneer mini-series from the creators of Life on Mars (BBC/ABC), Occupation (BBC), and Ashes to Ashes (BBC). The premiere episode of Outcasts will air on December 10, 2010 on BBC America. Eric will also be starring in Where the Road Meets the Sun which currently in post-production and is set for a 2010 release. With two heavily hyped projects on the horizon, it looks like Eric has a bright, bright career in front of him.

Becki Newton (Amanda) — The woman behind series favorite Amanda Tanen, Rebecca “Becki” Newton has had a busy few months. Love Bites, her new NBC hour long romantic comedy is scheduled to make its premiere this Fall season after encountering a few bumps in the road. To get a sneak peak of the new series, you can now find a promo trailer at NBC.com. Speaking of bumps, last month Becki announced that she and husband Chris Diamantopoulos are expecting their first child.

Judith Light (Claire) — Veteran actress and multiple Daytime Emmy award winner Judith Light has taken her star power to the center stage of a new Broadway production. Judith stars as Marie Lombardi in Lombardi which opens to the public October 21st. The play has been billed as “the new American play” and is based on Pulitzer Prize winning author David Maraniss’ best-selling biography, When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi. If that isn’t a great reason to be excited, you don’t have a pulse (or you are a bitter Vikings or Bears fan). As both a Packers and Judith Light fan, I am very excited for what I expect to be an excellent combination of PB&J magnitude. For more information about the play, go to www.lombardibroadway.com.

Michael Urie (Marc St. James) — Fans of Betty’s nemesis Marc Saint James (and I know there are a lot of you out there) shouldn’t fret too much over the loss of their beloved character. Michael Urie is going to be very, very available to his fans in the coming years. Michael is an active Twitter user (@twitter.com/MICHAELURIE) and has over 1,700 tweets on his account. In addition to Twitter, he is working on his personal website which will contain video blogs (or v-logs as the kids call it) and live chats with fans. Although the website is currently under construction, he says will be ready soon. Michael will also be in the upcoming British comedy The Decoy Bride, which also stars Alice Eve and David Tennant (best known for his role as the Tenth Incarnation of Dr. Who to those as nerdy as myself).

Ugly Betty: The Movie? — In undoubtedly the most exciting news for Ugly Betty fans, America Ferrera and Ana Ortiz have been pushing hard for an Ugly Betty movie. Both have been quoted on several websites expressing their interest in the project.  We also know that Judith Light expressed an interest in the movie concept (see our exclusive interview for more Judith quotables at http://vippartnership.com/wordpress/?p=213).  With rumors running rampant, some websites even believe that the movie is already in pre-production. I will withhold excitement until an official announcement is made, but I assure you all that I will keep my ear to the ground for any new developments.
