The chariot race may be the defining scene of Ben-Hur, but as indicated in the title of the classic 1880 book on which the film versions are based, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, it is also a story about Christianity. As Judah Ben-Hur’s journey through life parallels that of Jesus – and as Ben-Hur is led to the galley after being betrayed by Messala in the 2016 film (currently in theaters), it’s Jesus (played by Rodrigo Santoro) who gives him water. VIP Fan Auctions is currently offering the wooden crown of thorns worn by Jesus in the film. Included with the film relic is the loin cloth worn by Santoro – dirty and stained with stage blood, a wood Crucifixion plate and stage-rigged nails.
