MASTER OF THE LUDUS
It takes a special breed of Roman to run a ludus – toughness, ferocity, intelligence, cunning – and whether you love him or loathe him, Batiatus (playd by John Hannah) is a fascinating character. Obsessed with power, money – and impressing his father – Batiatus and his wife, Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) would stop at nothing to project an image of affluence and he ultimately brings his ludus to a level of prominence by training its first champion gladiator, Gannicus (Dustin Clare), but eventually fall son hard times again, crushed under the weight of his own debt. Symbols of Batiatus’s better days, however, including one of the tunics (pictured above) he wore onscreen as well as the leather wineskin he carried in Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Gods of the Arena are currently available to Spartacus fans at VIP Fan Auctions. Each item was custom made by the Spartacus production team – and will soon become the property of the winning bidder.
