Shots Fired will be new to FOX this season. It’s also sure to be one of the most talked about new shows, as it takes on the sensitive and challenging problem of racially charged police shootings. After a slew of incidents in recent months, including the events in Dallas, Baton Rouge, and Minnesota, to name a few, the topic is certainly at the top of mind for millions of Americans.

The idea for the show was set in motion in 2014, after the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. FOX Television Group chairman-CEO Dana Walden specifically wanted to kick off a project that dealt directly with this heated issue. The premise of the show centers on the fallout in a small North Carolina town following two police shootings. Variety reports, “Sanaa Lathan stars as a special prosecutor appointed by the Justice Department to investigate both cases.”

It is Walden’s hope that Shots Fired is a, “compelling dramatic thriller that can also help drive a larger cultural conversation.” It is certain to be a remarkable project, at a unique time in our nation’s history. Shots Fired is coming to FOX in 2017.
