A Collection of a Lifetime auction to feature rare Star Trek props and collectibles acquired over a 40-year period by a Michigan teacher
VIP Fan Auctions enlisted by Star Trek fan’s estate to bring her collection to the fans
(Naperville, Ill.) Renee Austin was a college student when Star Trek debuted in 1966, and she was immediately hooked on the series that would boldly go where no one had gone before – at least on television.
“The show was one of the forerunners of equality for both women and minorities, and she loved that about it,” says Austin’s daughter, Ariana Gibbs. “She grew up in a different era and liked the idea of women having the opportunity to do what they wanted to do.”
Austin, who would go on to become an elementary school teacher for more than 20 years, was more than one of the series’ original fans – she also became an avid, meticulous, and renowned collector of Star Trek memorabilia and props. When Renee passed away in 2010 at age 63, she left behind a trove of collectibles amassed over the course of more than 40 years – truly a collection of a lifetime.
After more than a decade in storage, hundreds of items from the collection – including props, autographed items, and licensed merchandise in original packaging – will be made available to fans. Many of the items are extremely rare – including a pair of Mr. Spock’s prosthetic ears from Star Trek IV – and acquired by Austin while attending and volunteering at dozens of conventions during the 1990s and 2000s.
“That’s what I’m excited about,” she adds. “This stuff has been sitting in a dark room for 12 years because I just didn’t have the ability to get these things into the hands of people who would appreciate it.”
VIP Fan Auctions will present the online event, dubbed “A Collection of a Lifetime,” in July at VIPFanAuctions.com. The auction will feature items from multiple Star Trek films as well as the original series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise.
“This is an amazing archive that is certain to make fans of science fiction – especially Star Trek – very happy,” says Mark Kaminky, managing partner of VIP Fan Auctions. “It’s clear these pieces were lovingly collected over a lifetime, and VIP is honored to partner with Renee’s estate to bring them out of storage and into the hands of fans.”
The auction will also include a selection of Star Trek memorabilia that has been obtained from private collections that wished to participate in this historic event.
Fans are welcome to preview a number of the auction items at Hollywood Palms Theater in Naperville, IL from 6 pm – 9 pm on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. Fans can also view the auction catalog and register to bid in the auction event at https://vipfanauctions.com/star-trek-auction/.
