The universe of the new Star Trek series, Discovery, will expand beyond television and into novels and comic books, revealed Kirsten Beyer, a writer and producer on the new CBS series during a panel at the Star Trek 50th anniversary convention, Mission New York, in early September. The new series, which takes place a decade before the original series, will allow writers to greater flexibility to explore the Star Trek mythology (including new alien races). “I think it’s about finding a space in the chronology where there’s room to maneuver and create stuff,” Beyer said at the convention. “I think what [executive producer Bryan Fuller] didn’t want to do was use the same characters that had been used on other series, so he looked and found this opening.” Beyer will oversee the Simon and Schuster novels and IDW comic, which will launch concurrently with the series in January.
